Introduction to Biology

1. What is science? What is the first step in doing science?
• Define science.• How does the process of science usually begin?
Science is a process of collecting information about the world around us by asking questions, making observations, and trying to find answers. The study of science helps us answer the how, what, where, and why of our surroundings. The first step is usually asking a question based on an observation.
📝 The word biology comes from two Greek words: bios (life) and logos (study) — meaning the study of living organisms.
2. What do the Holy Quran's verses tell us about the origin of life?
• What does the Quran say about the creation of man?• Name two Muslim scientists who contributed to biology.
The Holy Quran states, "We made every living thing from water" (Sura Al-Anbiya 21:30) — fitting with the fact that living things are 60–90% water. It also describes man being made "from clay like the potter" (Sura Rehman, Ayat 14), and describes the developmental stages from a drop to a clot to bones clothed with flesh (Sura Al-Mominoon, Ayat 14).
📝 Jabir Bin Hayyan, Abdul Malik Asmai, and Bu Ali Sina were Muslim scientists who contributed greatly to the knowledge of plants and animals.

• Define Botany, Zoology, and Microbiology.
Biology has three main divisions: Botany (the study of plants), Zoology (the study of animals), and Microbiology (the study of micro-organisms such as viruses and bacteria).
2. Differentiate between morphology, anatomy, and physiology.
• Define morphology with an example.• What is another name for anatomy?
Morphology is the study of the size, shape, and structure of organisms (e.g., the roots, stem, leaves of a plant). Anatomy, also called internal morphology, is the study of internal structure (e.g., heart, brain, kidneys). Physiology is the study of the functions of organs, e.g., digestion, respiration, excretion, and photosynthesis.
3. Define cytology, genetics, and taxonomy with examples.
• What is cytology also called?• Give an example of taxonomy.
Cytology (also called cell biology) is the study of the structure and functions of the cell. Genetics is the study of genes and heredity, e.g., red-flowered plants producing red flowerers. Taxonomy is the classification and naming of organisms — humans are classified as Homo sapiens.

Relationship With Other Sciences

1. Why is biology not an isolated science?
• Give an example of physics applying to biology.• Why is chemistry necessary to understand biology?
Biology is integrated with other sciences — animals move on the principles of physics (similar to a lever and human limbs), and the physical structure of atoms and molecules determines the chemical properties cells depend on, so basic chemistry knowledge is necessary to understand biology.
2. Define biophysics, biochemistry, and bio-economics with examples.
• What is biostatistics also called?
Biophysics studies biological phenomena using physics laws (e.g., movement of muscles). Biochemistry studies chemical reactions in organisms (e.g., digestion, photosynthesis). Bio-economics studies biology from an economic angle, e.g., the export value of wheat, fish, and rice.

Careers in Biology

1. What does MBBS stand for? Differentiate medicine and surgery.
• Name careers associated with fisheries and agriculture.
MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. Medicine is diagnosis and treatment of disease; surgery treats disease by removal or replacement of defective parts. Fisheries careers include fish farming and fishery management; agriculture careers include food science and agricultural engineering.
2. What is bioinformatics? Name some emerging careers in biology.
• What do astrobiologists and cryobiologists study?
Bioinformatics combines biology and information technology to understand complex biological data. New emerging careers include bioinformaticians, biomedical engineers, astrobiologists (effects of outer space on life), and cryobiologists (effects of low temperature on life).

Science Is a Collaborative Field

1. What is interdisciplinary research collaboration? Give examples.
• How does Cognitive Science combine different fields?• Give a famous global example of scientific collaboration.
When researchers from different fields work together to create new knowledge, it is called interdisciplinary research collaboration. Cognitive Science combines neurology, psychology, linguistics, and statistics; Public Health combines medicine, sociology, and psychology.
📝 The International Space Station is a famous example — space agencies from Europe, the USA, Russia, and Japan all team up.

The Biological Method

1. List the six steps of the biological method.
• How are biological problems solved?
The six steps are: Recognition of a biological problem, Observation and identification, building a Hypothesis, drawing Deductions, devising an Experiment, and Inferring the result.
Recognition → Observation → Hypothesis → Deduction → Experiment → Result
2. Differentiate between qualitative and quantitative observations.
• Why are quantitative observations more accurate?
Qualitative observations are based on a quality or characteristic (e.g., colour of a cat). Quantitative observations are based on a measurable value (e.g., height of a giraffe), so they are invariable and more accurate, since they can be expressed in numbers.
3. What is a hypothesis? List its characteristics.
• What kind of logic do deductions involve?
A hypothesis is a tentative explanation of observations that might be the answer to a biological problem. It should: be a general statement, be a tentative idea, agree with available observations, and be testable and potentially falsifiable. Deductions drawn from it use "if...then" logic.

Hypothesis, Theory & Law

1. How is a scientific theory different from a hypothesis?
• Can a theory be modified or rejected?
A scientific theory is much broader in scope than a hypothesis and is generally supported by more evidence. Scientists can still modify or reject a widely accepted theory if a new research method produces results that do not fit.
⚠️ A theory that has been verified and has wide application may become a biological law — e.g., Mendel's law of inheritance.
2. Define data. How is it organized and analysed?
• What is meant by analysis of data?
The collection of facts or information is called data. It is first collected, then organized using tables and graphs. Predicting on the basis of data is called analysis, done by means of ratio and proportion.
PART 4 Malaria — A Biological Method Case Study

Cause of Malaria

1. Describe the symptoms of malaria.
• How often does the malaria fever cycle repeat?
A malaria patient feels chilled and cold, with temperature rising above 98.6°F, headache, and nausea; after some time the person sweats and feels better. The cycle repeats every 24, 48, or 72 hours depending on the species of Plasmodium.
2. Who formulated the hypothesis that Plasmodium causes malaria?
• What deduction was drawn from this hypothesis?
Based on four key 19th-century observations, the French physician Laveran formulated the hypothesis in 1882 that "Plasmodium is the cause of malaria." The deduction drawn was: "If Plasmodium is the cause of malaria, then all persons ill with malaria should have Plasmodium in their blood."
3. How was this deduction tested, and what were the results?
• Define incubation period.
The blood of 100 malarial patients was examined against a control group of 100 healthy persons. Almost all patients had Plasmodium in their blood; only 7 of the 100 healthy persons did — these 7 were in the incubation period (the time between parasite entry and the appearance of symptoms) and later became ill.
📝 The results were announced worldwide, helping to control malaria.

Spread of Malaria & Vectors

1. Who listed observations about the spread of malaria, and what hypothesis followed?
• Give three of King's observations.
An American scientist, A. F. A. King, listed 20 observations in 1883 — e.g., people sleeping outdoors, without nets, or away from smoky fires got malaria more often. He suggested the hypothesis: "Mosquitoes transmit Plasmodium, so they are involved in the spread of malaria."
2. Describe Ronald Ross's 1897 experiment.
• How did Ross use sparrows in his experiments?
Ronald Ross, a British army physician in India, allowed a female Anopheles mosquito to bite a malarial patient and later found Plasmodium multiplying in its stomach. He confirmed transmission using Culex mosquitoes and sick sparrows, and finally an Italian biologist confirmed it through human testing.
3. What is a vector? Match the vectors to the diseases they transmit.
• What causes Dengue fever?
A vector is any organism that carries a parasite and transfers it from one organism to another.
